CINQUE TERRE
HEMINGWAY'S FAVOURITE FISHING SPOT IN ITALY
WATCH THE VIDEO OF THIS TRIP
Close to the world renowned Cinque Terre, crossing the remote areas of the Ligurian Apennines, the Trebbia and Aveto rivers are beautiful Apennine streams with large holes, blades and currents, holding large rainbow trout and the native Mediterranean brown trout.
Hemingway described them as some of the most beautiful rivers he had ever fished.
MEDITERRANEAN BROWNS AND RAINBOWS
The Cinque Terre is the most famous crescent of coastline along the Italian Riviera spilling out on the Mediterranean Sea. Encompassing five colorful fishing villages that cascade down ravines and cling onto clifftops, the startlingly beautiful Ligurian coast boasts great food and wine along with these almost unreal views. It really is everything we love about Italy all in one place and well deserves its UNESCO World Heritage status.
What is less known beyond these well loved villages is the lush and verdant mountain range dominating just inland. Here the Alps handover to the Apennines, beginning their rise and fall all the way to Calabria on the southern tip. This remote area served as refuge for reclusive Friars in the middle ages and the unforgiving terrain made it the ideal hideout for the Italian Resistance during the second world war. The peaks rise to 1800 meters and cut many amazing river valleys: ideal
habitat for rainbow and Mediterranean wild trout!
The Aveto river begins from the base of Mount Caucaso and flows into the Trebbia on their shared journey to the sea, forming the major waterway in the region. These rivers are dotted with large holes, swift currents and ‘backcast friendly’ banks that make it pleasantly fishable and fun for such a wild place. The fish grow to 50cm but even the smaller trout are feisty and strong.
Hemingway drove through here in 1945 while embedded as war correspondent in the Allied liberation forces. He was famously taken with the valley and returned in 1950 to fly fish, reportedly declaring in his journal that it was “the most beautiful valley in this world”. High praise indeed from the Nobel Prize winner and world traveling angler.
Whether you are looking for a day trip adventure to escape the hot crowds along the coast or putting together a multi-day
trip chasing trout with a friend this is a fantastic bit of Italy for anglers. Italy at its fishy best!
